How/What Do I Know?

Having been involved in the game of netball since the tender age of 11, I feel I know a little bit about it.

Not only that, but during that 25+ years I have seen it being transformed over and over again. The game in my early stages was filled with fun, friends and Saturday morning competitions that were the most exciting part of my week.Over the years you’ll be happy to know (I am) that little has changed. I’m still playing a sport that I love and am still lucky enough to be surrounded by good friends in the form of my team mates.

And, I guess that’s a good thing given the amount of time that we now dedicate to the game.

In fact this commitment, mainly due to netball’s increased professionalism is probably the biggest change I’ve seen over the years. Even in my first year with the Swifts in 1997 we only trained together around 3 times a week, with each session lasting no more than an hour and a half. These days that’s closer to 6 days a week for a minimum of 2 hours.

The content of these training sessions has also changed dramatically. Gone are the warm ups that consisted of running 6 laps and then sitting to stretch for half an hour. Warm ups now consist of constant movement and dynamic stretches. The modern day player will also include a variety of off court sessions to the mix, with at least 3 days a week spent in the gym lifting weights and on the field completing fitness and speed requirements.

With the game becoming faster, tougher and sharper it’s moved away from not only being the traditional participation sport but into a whole new world of a highly recognisable spectator sport...... and with this comes the crowds! Over the years I’ve gone from playing in front of a couple of hundred people (mainly parents and friends) to playing in front of sold out arenas and world record netball crowds of 15,000 +. As the game continues to evolve it becomes so important to keep on top of it and to strive to find new ways of doing things, which is why I’ve developed Holding Court.

As an as an accredited coach I have spent hundreds of hours passing on my knowledge to kids, even coaches from all areas. Through school visits, country road shows, private clinics, interstate visits and local team clinics I’ve coached all sorts, and skill levels of netballer’s. Remembering every little skill and drill I’ve done in the past however, is near impossible. Holding Court has been created to act as a catalogue for all of these ‘skills and drills’, enabling me to have them at my fingertips at any time and, even better than that, collate a training session from them within minutes.

Now I’m passing them on to you!! Being the most popular women’s sport in the country with an estimated 1 million participants nationwide, I know there’s a few of you out there that could do with the help!!!!!

Enjoy and have a great season.
